Written Instructions — Timber Hitch

  1. Wrap around timber Pass rope around the log and bring working end back to cross over standing part.
  2. Complete the wrap Continue working end around so it crosses the standing part and completes the wrap.
  3. Twist working end around itself Wind the working end around the rope loop (not the timber) at least 3 times.
  4. Three or more twists More twists = more grip. The twisted section lies against the timber under tension.
  5. Pull load end Tension creates grip. Release tension and the hitch uncoils and releases.

Tips for Tying a Timber Hitch

  • Three twists minimum — add more for larger or heavier timbers.
  • Combine with a half hitch 18 inches up the timber to keep logs from rolling sideways when dragging.
  • The timber hitch is self-releasing when tension is removed — this makes it ideal for logging work.
  • Works best on rough-surfaced timbers — smooth poles provide less friction.
