Written Instructions — Square Lashing
- Start with clove hitch Tie a clove hitch on the vertical pole right at the crossing point.
- Diagonal wraps Wrap rope diagonally: over vertical, under horizontal, 3–4 times, keeping tight.
- Frapping turns Wrap 2–3 times between the poles in the gap at the joint to cinch wraps tight.
- Finish with clove hitch End with a clove hitch on the horizontal pole right at the joint. Pull everything tight.
Tips for Tying a Square Lashing
- The frapping turns are what make the lashing rigid — skipping them leaves a floppy joint.
- Each wrap should be as tight as you can pull it — strength comes from friction, not from the knot itself.
- Start and finish on the same pole for a neater appearance and easier untying.
- A properly tied square lashing supports the weight of a standing person on a structure — the standard of excellence.
